When I went about putting together an online portfolio, I decided that I wanted it to reflect who I was, instead of being a generic, templated site. I wanted it to be more of an experience, not just a flat display.
I'm an old school nerd. I grew up on my Commodore 64, I ran a bulletin board system in the 90s on my 386. I love ANSI art. I once collected and restored retro Apple machines. At one point I had 33 of them.
As I came into my teens in the 90s, one of my favorite machines was the Macintosh SE/30 with System 7. I wanted this site to be a love letter to the early Macintosh, in both look and feel.
This site is ever-evolving and will be updated as time allows. This isn't an encyclopedia of everything I've ever done (that would be impossible), but I tried to curate some things that were interesting — let's call it a compendium.
Enjoy!
PS — If you poke around a bit, you may find a throwback game from the Nokia 6110.
I’m an Emmy Award-winning creative professional with over 20 years of experience spanning graphic design, art direction, creative direction, and media production. I’ve led teams through every stage of the creative process, from concept to execution, ensuring seamless collaboration and high-quality outcomes. With a passion for both storytelling and technology, I bring a comprehensive understanding of design, production, and strategy, making ideas come to life in impactful ways.
I’m a multimedia artist who focuses on painting, digital, and conceptual art. I’ve also recently begun exploring product design and mobile app development.
I began entering elementary school art fairs in the first grade, usually coming away with some second-place ribbons and honorable mentions. Before I knew it, I was sitting in front of my Commodore 64 computer for hours, drawing elaborate scenes out of keyboard characters, line by line, with absolutely no way to save them to a disk.
In my teens, I started teaching myself guitar and piano, while learning C programming and HTML, just as Netscape Navigator was born. Although it would have been a more stable idea to pursue a career in computer science, the lure of playing in a rock band was too strong. I played and toured a bit and have a lot of crazy stories but ultimately ended up on the business side of music.
In 1999, after learning Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, I began making album covers and flyer art for friends' bands. In 2002, I decided to attend Columbia College Chicago for graphic design. Only a few semesters in, I was hired by a marketing agency on Michigan Avenue in Chicago as a graphic designer, working on projects for companies like Shell, Volkswagen, and Hunter Douglas.
From there, I finished my degree in arts management and started a record label and artist management company that had acts on the Vans Warped Tour and performing at SXSW. I handled all marketing and creative in-house and grew some bands from small crowds to selling out 1100-seat theatres, utilizing both early social media marketing and unique engagement campaigns.
I then made the move to Los Angeles in 2010 and pivoted into film. My credits include writing, producing, directing, cinematography, editing, and acting. In 2016, I won an Emmy® award for producing and directing a PSA for a national anti-hate campaign. I’ve done numerous short film and new media projects, and have learned the production process inside and out.
After making a pandemic move to Salt Lake City — I currently split my time between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, I became the creative director for the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, where I handle the creative for all marketing and communications projects for 13 state offices and initiatives, statewide events, and campaigns. I also do freelance creative work.
Welcome!
I'm Mike Racanelli, an Emmy Award-winning creative and art director with over 20 years of experience in the industry.
